One of the most popular fishing rods we discuss is the Cadence CR5 spinning rod – in this article, I will give it a thorough review to explain just what makes the CR5 so exciting.
The CR5 is incredibly versatile with a huge range of sizes, action, and fishing line weights. If you want a fishing rod for bass, walleye, or trout, then you will be able to find one that suits your requirements in Cadence’s range.
In terms of length, you can pick one from 4’8″ to 7″ and from Ultralight to Medium-Heavy power. If transport and travel are important then just pick the 2 piece models.
There is truly every type of rod available so you can certainly find one for yourself.
All of the information in this review is based on my own personal experiences with the CR5 and the CR7.

Cadence CR5 Spinning Rod Review
Let’s dive into the review!
I think Cadence themselves put in best when they highlight the versatility of this rod:
“The Cadence CR5 is ideal for gamefish including freshwater fish like bass, walleye, and trout as well as some popular inshore species like redfish, speckled trout, and flounder.”Cadence Fishing
- Lightweight and strong due to 30-ton graphite blank
- Smooth casting and durable from Stainless steel guides with SIC inserts
- Ergonomic Fuji reel seat
- Comfortable Cork and EVA handles
30 Ton Carbon Blanks
So what is a 30 ton carbon blank?
It is a measure of the modulus or tensile strength of the carbon fibers. Modulus describes the stiffness of the rod.
Different manufacturers use different numbers, classifications, and even units, so take the comparisons with a grain of salt.
All of these values try to describe the strength and flexibility of the carbon fibers and hence the performance of the fishing rod.
Here is a quick overview of the common numbers you might see:
- IM-6 graphite = 30+ ton material (Standard Modulus)
- IM-7 graphite = 35+ ton material (Intermediate Modulus)
- IM-8 graphite = 40+ ton material (Inter-high Modulus)
- IM-10 graphite = 54+ ton material (High Modulus)
So what does this mean for the Cadence CR5?
Not that much to be honest – it is mostly marketing hype. You can’t compare it with other rods as there is so much else that goes into the performance of the rod. It is like comparing the size of an engine without knowing the horsepower.
Just know that the CR5 is made from carbon fiber which offers superior strength and lightweight compared to old-fashioned materials.
Fuji Reel Seat
The combined Fuji reel seat and cork handle gives the best of both worlds in terms of comfort and durability. I am a big fan of cork handles particularly due to the slip resistance even when wet or covered in fish guts.
When you are reeling in a trophy fish that is fighting back or even if you are casting hard for multiple days in a row then having a comfortable grip like cork is crucial to avoid hurting your hands.
Stainless Steel Guides
The stainless steel guides with SiC inserts are extremely durable and corrosion-resistant. They provide low friction against the line for better casting and retrieval. This also helps with the sensitivity so you can feel the fish nibbling earlier.
One of the most common failure mechanisms of most rods is either a broken guide or a broken tip – so making sure these are made from high-quality materials is crucial to getting the longest life and most value for money.
I always prefer high durable gear – the last thing you want is a damaged guide during a fishing trip.
The CR5 has a wide range of both 1 and 2-piece models. So if you travel a lot for fishing then you can break your rod in half and fit it in your car, the back of your truck, or even just for storage.
The 2 piece rods are also easy to carry if you need to hike a few models from your truck to your favorite isolated fishing spot.
There are also plenty of travel rod cases available if you prefer the longer one-piece models.
- The 2 piece design makes it very easy to transport without losing strength or sensitivity
- There is a huge range of lengths, actions, and powers available so you will certainly find the combination you need
- I really like the sensitivity which gives you an early indication of a fish strike
- The cork handle is very comfortable from an ergonomic viewpoint
- This might just be due to my large hands, but I do find the rod handle to be narrow at times.
- The reel seat in the CR5 isn’t as stable as other options

Cadence CR5 Video
The video below is the official marketing video from Cadence Fishing about the CR5 so you can see the rod in action:
Cadence CR5 vs CR7
You cannot think about buying a Cadence CR5 without exploring a comparison with its big brother, the CR7. The CR7 is 30% more expensive but it is made from 40-ton graphite rather than the 30-ton of the CR5. It also comes carbon wrapped and uses a more premium grade of cork in the handles.
This allows the CR7 to be manufactured in longer lengths, up to 7’6″. The CR7 is also only available in 1 piece.
We also have a full review of the Cadence CR7 so that you can see the comparative differences with the CR5.
