Technical Specifications
The Speed Demon Elite boasts impressive specs with a 7.2:1 gear ratio, which makes it one of the fastest spinning reels on the market.
It features a maximum drag of 17 lbs, 10+1 shielded stainless steel ball bearings, an aluminum spool with a braid-ready line holder, and a lightweight carbon body.
The reel is available in only two sizes, so it has limited application for larger saltwater species.
2000-sized model specifications:
- Gear Ratio: 7.4:1
- Ball Bearings: 10+1
- Max Drag: 17.6 lb
- Line Capacity: 125 yards of 10 pound mono
- Weight: 8.7 ounces
- Retrieve Rate: 38.6 inches per crank
3000-sized model specifications:
- Gear Ratio: 7.4:1
- Ball Bearings: 10+1
- Max Drag: 17.6 lb
- Line Capacity: 190 yards of 10 pound mono
- Weight: 8.9 ounces
- Retrieve Rate: 42.1 inches per crank
The retrieve rate of this reel is so fast that it is one of the few spinning reels that I would ever consider over a baitcaster for fast-moving jerkbait lures.
These are the specifications of a premium reel at a stunningly low price.
Design
First impressions – this reel is georgous. I love the red and black color scheme combined with its shape alone the body. Even the drag knob is styled to look great.
KastKing has crafted a sleek, ergonomic design with the Speed Demon Elite. The carbon body and rotor reduce weight and ensure durability and corrosion resistance. The aluminum spool and handle, paired with the EVA grip, add to the reel’s overall strength while providing a comfortable hold during long fishing sessions.
The unique “Demon Eye” design adds a flair that sets this reel apart from its competitors.
Build Quality
When I saw the price tag I was expecting a lot of plastic, but that is far from the case. The Speed Demon Elite is manufactured to the highest quality from the top materials. It is entirely aluminum and stainless steel with carbon fiber on the rotor and drag washers.
You will be hard pressed to find a reel with this build quality for double the price from any of the mainstream manufacturers.
- Frame: Aluminum
- Body: CNC Machined Aluminum Alloy
- Main Gear: 7075 Aluminum
- Main Shaft: Stainless Steel
- Pinion Gear: Brass
- Ball Bearings: Stainless Steel
- Spool: Anodized Aluminum
- Rotor: Carbon Fiber
- Handle: CNC Aluminum
- Handle Knob: EVA
- Drag Washers: Carbon Fiber
KastKing are able to deliver such high quality at affordable prices but selling directly through their own website. They don’t utilize distribution through retailers like Bass Pro like the big boys. This enables them to cut out the retailer’s profit margins and deliver products directly to the consumers at 20-50% less.
When it comes to value for money, KastKing reign supreme.
Field Test Results
After unboxing it, I took my reel down to my local freshwater lake. I matched it with my 6’9″ Ugly Stik Rod and used a 1-ounce lure. I spooled it with 10 lb mono.
Here is the video of my testing results so you can see the reel in action:
The Speed Demon Elite truly shines when it comes to performance. The high-speed gear ratio enables rapid line retrieval when targeting fast-swimming species. The reel’s smoothness was remarkable, thanks to the 10+1 shielded stainless steel ball bearings.
I tested the max drag with my own scales and delivered over 19 pounds, compared to KastKing’s 17 lb specifications. This is a powerful and well-constructed reel. The triple-disc carbon drag system was powerful and smooth, allowing me to confidently handle large fish without compromising performance.
I did find the drag knob was small, particularly in height, which made it more difficult to adjust on the fly. This could become an issue when you are in the middle of a battle with a trophy bass. I would suggest setting the drag correctly beforehand and leaving it.
The reel’s line lay was consistent and even, reducing the chances of line twist and tangles. I will note that I did find the line was able to catch on the spike design at the base of the spool. This only happened once but is worth mentioning.
I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of the Speed Demon Elite. I had assumed from its price tag that it would perform like an entry-level reel, but it is a premium design. It is well-built from quality materials and has high-end specifications.
I found the EVA handle to be extremely comfortable. It has a flatter ergonomic design that I prefer to the cylindrical designs of most spinning reels.
All in - this is a high quality reel at a remarkably cheap price point, making it one of the best value-for-money options currently available.
Ease of Use and Maintenance
Setting up and adjusting the Speed Demon Elite is a breeze, with its easily accessible (although slightly small) drag adjustment knob and versatile braid-ready spool. The reel requires minimal maintenance, with just a few drops of oil needed periodically to keep it running smoothly. KastKing included a schematic and maintenance guide to assist you with the process.
To prolong the lifespan of your KastKing Speed Demon Elite, be sure to rinse it with freshwater after each use, especially if you’re fishing in saltwater environments. Regular maintenance, such as oiling the bearings and cleaning the drag system, will help ensure your reel remains in peak condition for years.
Incredible Value for Money
Considering its premium build quality, innovative features, and exceptional performance, the KastKing Speed Demon Elite offers great value for money. While it may be more expensive than some entry-level options, the reel’s durability and high-speed capabilities make it a worthwhile investment for serious anglers.
I would compare this reel too much more expensive alternates - it is a multi-hundred dollar reel at a fraction of the cost.
Pros
- Incredible value for money – this is a premium reel at an affordable price point.
- High-speed 7.2:1 gear ratio for rapid line retrieval – great for predatory species like bass.
- Smooth performance with 10+1 shielded stainless steel ball bearings.
- Powerful and smooth triple-disc carbon drag system.
- Comfortable ergonomic designed EVA grip.
Cons
- I found the line can get trapped on the spikey design at the base of the spool.
- You will need to slow down your retrieve if you are using a deep-diving crankbait.
- The drag knob isn’t very high and can be difficult to adjust during a fight.
- Only available in 2000 and 3000 sized models.
Alternate Reel Comparison
An alternative to the KastKing Speed Demon Elite Spinning Reel is the Pflueger Supreme XT Spinning Reel. It is the only other option with a similar price tag that features the same 10+1 ball bearings.
But that is where the similarities end. The Speed Demon Elite is cheaper, significantly more powerful, has more line capacity, and is suitable for saltwater.
There is literally no reason I would pick the Pflueger Supreme XT over the KastKing Speed Demon Elite. It is superior in every way.
Conclusion
The KastKing Speed Demon Elite Spinning Reel is an exceptional choice for avid anglers seeking a high-speed, high-performance reel. Its lightweight design, smooth operation, and powerful drag system make it an excellent option for various fishing scenarios.
Its value for money is unmatched. This is a high performance reel with durable materials and workmanship. If you’re in the market for a top-tier spinning reel at an affordable price, the Speed Demon Elite is worth considering.
